Sushikatten uses the oldest technique of glass art. She experimentally incorporates sand, silver, pigment, etc. and polishes the fired glass into rings of minimalistic shapes. She borrows elements both from sculpturing and jewelry so that you can appreciate the mellowing glass's cosmic colorfulness right from your fingers.

身に付ける小宇宙
スシカッテンの作るジュエリーは、身に付けることのできるアート作品。
ガラス工芸の最古の技法パートドヴェール製法を用い、デザインから最終研磨までが全て手作業の一点もの。
ガラスの宇宙的な遊色を指先から鑑賞出来る、彫刻と装飾芸術の両方の要素をあわせ持つ作品を制作しています。光と影、不透明と透明が共存し様々な表情を魅せるガラスという素材から、
身に付ける人とのダイアログを生み出せるようなジュエリーを作り上げたいと願っております。
Sculptural Glass Ring
This tiny piece of kiln cast glass becomes a wearable form of art after spending a considerable amount of time and effort. It sets off on a journey from a point of modeling and forming a positive in clay to make an open mould. It is later to be filled with molten glass and sent to a kiln. Coming out of the kiln is solidified glass in the mould precisely capturing the detail of its original clay model. Since the mould is made out of plaster, it finishes its one time role after being broken with a hammer. The removed glass is shaved and ground down with several kinds of disks and polished with more than six grades of polishing sand for each of its surfaces.
ガラスの指輪
スシカッテンのジュエリーはすべて１点もの。
ガラス工芸の技法のひとつ、パートドヴェール製法をメインに製作しています。
小さなガラスのかたまりが指輪になるまでには、多くの工程が必要です。
粘土やスチロールで指輪の原型を作り、その原型から耐火石膏を流し込みます。
石膏が固まったら、中から粘土をかき出し、空いた部分に砕いたガラスの粒を詰めて電気炉へ。
この石膏型は中の成形されたガラスを取り出すため、ハンマーで壊します。取り出されたガラスのかたまりは、数種類の研磨用のディスクや、ダイヤモンドのグラインダーなどを使って削って形を整えていきます。そして、砂や磨き粉などを使って徐々に番手を細かくしながら表面を磨いていきます。
ひとつの面をピカピカに光らせるのに必要な番手の種類はおよそ６段階あります。
また、ジュエリーには科学の実験のようにガラスと異素材の組み合わせも試みています。
砂、紙、炭、銅、真鍮、パール、鉱物、日本画用の岩絵具など、
小さなガラスの中で起きるケミストリーは、釜から出すまでのお楽しみです。

Mio Toyoda: Jeweller / Artdirector
東京工芸大学グラフィックデザイン学科を2005年に卒後。 12年程グラフィックデザイナーとして広告、web、紙媒体 などで活動中。2009年から単身で4年間スウェーデンに 在住中に、ガラスの透明感とグラデーションの魅力の虜に なる。 国内、海外また独学でコールドワークを勉強中。
